Long neck and milk Jugs
Biog
My interest is predominantly within form. I love shapes of items and the negative spaces they create around them. The subtle curve of a mug or bowl or the sharp edge of a sculptural piece are simple things that I find aesthetically pleasing. My influences are gained from coastal landscapes for colour, texture and form.
My work is wheel thrown, from stoneware clay, and the more sculptural pieces are thrown in sections and put together to create forms that could not easily be thrown from one lump of clay. I like to use satin-matt glazes as they are sympathetic to form where a high gloss glaze could distort the shape.
The range of items I make include mugs, jugs, bowls, tea light holders, oil burners and several different shapes that I see as more sculptural pieces that can be used as vases or would decorate a room as they are.
I graduated from UCS in 2007 and set up in my own studio in 2009. Since then I have taken part in professional development classes to refine my glaze techniques and on occasion been a teaching assistant with Ray Auker. I look forward to teaching my own classes and seeing where my profession takes me!
60 second interview
Q: What is your favourite colour?A: GreenQ: Who first inspired you to start making/ creating and what words of advice did they give you?A: Stephen Baker was my throwing teacher and he really helped me to look carefully at what I was doing and to be mindful about my work. He emphasised the importance of finishing the rims and getting a defined line where needed as these things can make or break the overall shape of an item, he understood my passion for form. Q: Where and when do you most like to work?A: I like to work anywhere there is a potter's wheel, I'm not too fussy, although I do like to have my wheel facing a window with a nice view. I work better late morning onwards.Q: Which season of the year most inspires you?A: SpringQ: What can't you work without?A: Well, there are the obvious items like my wheel and clay and I have a select few tools that are my favourites to use, such as my little wooden stick that finishes every piece I throw. I love to have music playing too.Q: Whose work do you most admire?A: I love the work of Hans Coper; his forms are beautiful and very influencial. I also like the work of Issey Miyake as a lot of his clothes have a very interesting form. There are so many others and they vary greatly, but they take the lead at the moment.Q: What is your favourite piece of fiction and why?A: Well... There are a few; the classic Lord of the Rings, and the collection of stories that have truly made me look at life in a completely different and positive way are The Celestine Prophecy's.Q: What do you do to relax?A: I like to meditate, walk in nature and listen to music, mostly reggae as I like to DJ with that genre.Q: Describe your artistic style in 3 words. A: Cool, Calm and Contemporary.
