Product info

Development of my discus art forms with ebony inlays now with a split section and new style mounting for changing the display angle. These forms are purely for display and their infinite variability gives a freshness when seen at different angles. The base has an ebony inlay to echo those on the discus; one side of the gap is dyed black for a further exercise in contrast.

Care instructions

Dust as necessary. To rotate the piece to any angle, simply loosen the wing nut at the back, rotate to the desired angle and screw up the nut again - just tight enough to stop the piece turning.

Materials

To make the gap I sawed the blank on a friend's table saw then glued it together again with newspaper between the layers (an old woodturners' trick). After finishing, a sharp knife inserted carefully parts the pieces cleanly and a little sanding gets rid of the paper. I used the extracted piece to make a jig for accurate drilling for the steel holding rods. The inlays are in my usual style ie turned individually to fit drilled holes.

Wood is an enormously varied and versatile material. In my workshop in Oxford I use mostly locally sourced timber, especially ash, sycamore and elm - but not oak to which I am allergic - to make a range of turned products, many using my signature inlays.
