Designs in the 1950s were inspired by science and space exploration. Atomic-inspired shapes and clean-cut designs created the style known as ‘mid-century modern’. After the war there was a new optimism with the end of the rationing, the new queen and the new look. Open plan living took off and new materials like vinyl and plastic were very present.
