My childhood has left a lasting impression on my interests in life and greatly influences my work. From long strolls along the coast, hill walks tramping through heather and long grasses or wandering through the woods and playing outside in the fields in summer, memories of my Scottish childhood encapsulate a sense of both freedom and security.
I loved being outside watching the wind rustle fields of barley or lying in the garden, amongst the clover, reading and watching the clouds drift overhead. My Granny was a keen gardener and my Dad liked bird watching so I grew up with an appreciation of nature and the beautiful landscapes and wildlife surrounding me.
I was an avid reader and spent many an hour curled up in a quiet corner devouring a book. I was quite fanciful and romantic and spent a lot of time daydreaming and living in my imagination. I am still fascinated by stories and myths and feel drawn to anything that reminds me a character or scenario from a book.
My mum was very creative and encouraged me to draw and sew from an early age.
I have always enjoyed making and creating things. I can remember the thrill of choosing fabrics for a dress, opening a brand new set of felt tip pens, drawing designs of my favourite outfits and the satisfaction of completing a project.
Pursuing my love of art and design I chose to study textiles at university. Upon graduation I worked for a number of fashion and textile companies. On one particular placement I learned how to use a sewing machine to freehand embroider. This was the beginning of the work I do now. I discovered it was a way which allowed me to translate my drawings and designs into fabric without the need for specialist equipment. My aim is to use this skill to create beautiful, handmade products with a sense of integrity. Inspired by nature my work is designed to be soothing and uplifting.
