Helen Steel

Textile maker
Happiness is integral to what I do. An early love affair with art and creative projects, combined with my passion for colour and pattern resulted in a degree studying textiles. I now make beautiful, uplifting products inspired by childhood stories and the wonderful world of nature around me.

60 second interview

Q: What is your favourite colour?A: GreenQ: Who first inspired you to start making/ creating and what words of advice did they give you?A: My mum. She always encouraged me in my creative endeavours and was incredibly supportive of whatever I did.Q: Where and when do you most like to work?A: I like being up early as I feel very productive. In reality things tend to end up being more late night than early morning! I work best at my desk with some peace and quiet to think (or some music if I'm sewing).Q: Which season of the year most inspires you?A: SpringQ: What can't you work without?A: My sewing machine, fabric, needles, thread, iron and embroidery scissors - these are the essential tools of my trade. Also my laptop for e-mails, camera for product shots, pen, paper for scribbling notes and ideas, calculator, diary for organising my life....quite an extensive list!Q: Whose work do you most admire?A: I really like Donna Wilson's work, although her style is quite different to mine. I met her at a business event and she was really nice and helpful, as well as being super successful. However I am inspired by lots of different work - there are so many talented people and interesting ideas out there.Q: What is your favourite piece of fiction and why?A: As a child it was 'Anne of Green Gables'. I don't have a current favourite now - it tends to vary depending on what I've most recently read. I did however greatly enjoy 'The God of Small Things' and 'Eat Pray Love'.Q: What do you do to relax?A: Spend time with friends and family, read a good book, take a walk, bake, watch a film or share a nice meal.Q: Describe your artistic style in 3 words. A: personal, illustrative, happy
